William Abbott

Birth Date: 1929-04-26
Deceased Date: 2018-12-15
Obituary:
ABBOTT, William (Bill) April 26, 1929 - December 15, 2018
William "Bill", beloved husband of Muriel, passed away peacefully at Royal University Hospital at the age of 89 years surrounded by his inseparable and devoted family.

He was a loving father to sons Craig William (deceased) and Greg William, and daughter Penny Gaylin (Alisauskas). Bill was a kind-hearted father-in-law to Ray Alisauskas, and loving and proud grandfather to Penny and Ray's children, Justin (Chenise Petit), Joseph (Isabelle Baconnais) and Andrea (Clay Raynard).

He was a friend to so many who remember his sense of humor and gentle voice. Bill was raised by parents Clement and Nora (Dennis), along with his sisters Phyllis and Roberta (deceased) and brother George on the farm near Radisson, SK. The family moved to 28th Street in Caswell Hill, Saskatoon, to spend the school year, returning to the farm during summers. Bill attended Caswell Hill School, Bedford Road Collegiate and University of Saskatchewan.

He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1952. He met Muriel Smith, a young nurse and love of his life for the next 66 years, at a dance in Clear Lake, Manitoba. They married in London, Ontario, on December 2, 1953, and spent the following 3.5 years in England, France and Germany. There, Bill served his country and NATO as a fighter pilot of F-86 Sabres with the Canadian 441 (Silver Fox) Fighter Squadron, attaining the rank of Captain. After returning to Canada in 1956, he was a flight instructor with 2401 Squadron starting in Montreal and then stationed at various bases around Canada transitioning to helicopters.

The family moved to Saskatoon in 1977 after his military career. Bill entered the helicopter industry as a pilot, instructor and business partner retiring in the 1990s, and then began his passions for proudly watching his grandchildren grow, and carefully tending to his farm on the river. He continued to spend many hours in his shop where he repaired anything that needed fixing, especially the beautiful antiques that he so masterfully restored and valued. We miss him very dearly!

A memorial reception will be held at Edwards Family Centre, 333 4th Ave North, Saskatoon, at 1 p.m. on January 12, 2019. Please consider donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Canadian Diabetes Association in lieu of flowers. Condolences may be left at www.saskatoonfuneralhome.com. Opal was born on September 11, 1932 on her grandparent's farm near Valley Centre, SK. She grew up in Saskatoon where she attended Bedford Road Collegiate and the Saskatoon Technical Collegiate Institute where she took a secretarial course. She worked as an office assistant for a doctor for a few years. Opal met the love of her life, January in February, 1952 at a dance. They were married July 19, 1952, just 4 months after their first date. Jan died just 6 weeks before their 60th Wedding Anniversary.

Mom loved the outdoors, whether working in the garden or taking long walks. She would often be found puttering outside even later in life when arthritis was impairing her mobility. She loved music so much that she taught herself to play her daughter's accordion with some help from Lynn. After retirement, Dad bought her a portable piano where she would play to her heart's content until arthritis in her hands made it too painful.

Opal was a very caring person and her grandchildren brought her a lot of joy, especially her great-grandchild Beau. Together Opal and Jan undertook a major project in 1976, building a log cabin at Candle Lake. This included felling and transporting trees to their home site where Opal did the major part of pealing the logs. This is where they spent their years of retirement enjoying the lake and living in their dream home for over 23 years.

During their early retirement they were very active with the Candle Lake seniors. Opal and Jan loved spending time fishing, camping and traveling around the country. Many trips were made across Western Canada. They enjoyed life as snowbirds and spent several winters in Arizona. Later on they enjoyed spending time exploring Victoria during the winter months.

The family thanks Dr. Bischoff for the years he cared for Opal, and the staff at Pineview Care Home that cared for her with dignity, compassion and understanding for over a year and a half. A quiet interment service will be held December 8 at 1:00 p.m. at the Candle Lake Cemetery. A celebration of life will take place later in the spring. Donations can be made on Opal's behalf to the Pineview Terrace Recreation program. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca. Al was born on the family farm at Langham, SK, on April 27, 1932, where he lived until moving to Saskatoon in Grade 1. He attended Caswell and Westmount School and Bedford Road Collegiate. He was always a strong supporter of the old red and white, proudly attending the 100th anniversary of Bedford a year ago. Dad loved basketball, playing in high school and for the Navy, and coaching at the U of S. His love of sports led to a life in the sports business. Starting with Athletic Equipment Sales (AES) in 1955, the business now known as Al Anderson’s Source for Sports is still operating almost 70 years later.

Al and Joan first met in Watrous when they were teenagers and it was love at first sight. Theirs was an amazing love story and they were incredibly devoted to each other and supported each other always. They were married in 1955 and had 67 wonderful years together. Our entire family has enjoyed many memorable summers with Mom and Dad at the family cabin at Emma Lake and some awesome vacations in Clearwater Beach, Florida. Dad was a loving father to his 5 children. In 1960 Doug was born with cerebral palsy. At this time there were almost no services available to children with special needs. This led to a lifetime commitment of creating services and opportunities for children

and adults with disabilities, being a founding member of Elmwood Residences, Cosmopolitan Industries, and the Saskatchewan Prevention Institute.

Dad received many accolades for his service to our city and province, including Saskatoon Citizen of the Year, the Howard Stensrud Spirit of Cosmo Award, the B’nai Brith We’re Proud of You Award and most recently the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 2023.

Dad loved music! He sang in the church choir, performed with his cousins’ band The Rey Dahlen Sound, was a soloist at church and at many weddings and funerals, and composed many original tunes.

Faith was important to dad and he was a member of Zion Lutheran Church for 86 years. Al’s family would like to thank the staff at Trinity Manor and the Hospice at Glengarda for their excellent care and compassion for our Dad. We want to thank Liz who started as a caregiver for our mom, became a friend to all of us and continued as a helper to dad. A celebration of Al’s life will be held on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at 11:00 am at Zion Lutheran Church, 323 4th Ave S, Saskatoon. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the "Stensrud Family Top of the Rock Trust", care of Cosmopolitan Industries, 28 - 34th St E, Saskatoon, SK, S7K 3Y2.

Florence Knight (Androsoff)

Birth Date: 1930-05-05
Deceased Date: 2014-05-03
Obituary:
KNIGHT, Florence P. (nee Androsoff)
May 5, 1930 – Krydor, Saskatchewan
May 3, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta
With the greatest sadness we announce the passing of Florence P. Knight of Calgary, who passed away after a long illness at the Foothills Medical Centre on Saturday, May 3, 2014, just two days short of her 84th birthday.

She was born Florence P. Androsoff on May 5, 1930, at Krydor, Saskatchewan, the first-born of Pete and Tina Androsoff. Raised on her parents' family farm near Blaine Lake, Florence learned the love of "family and farm" from a young age. She walked several miles to and from school, later riding horseback or running a horse-drawn cutter alone to and from her studies, as dust or snow-bound roads allowed. Moving with her family to Saskatoon during the Second World War, Florence graduated from Bedford Collegiate, then attended Saskatoon Secretarial School for two years, becoming qualified as a stenographer. Soon after, Florence was employed in the billing department, Saskatoon Dairy Pool. Making the move to Calgary in 1948, Florence was offered a secretarial position at Western Grocers Ltd., where she later met and married Raymond Knight of Crossfield, Alberta.

For three years, Florence and Ray managed the Androsoff farm at Blaine Lake, then tenant- farmed for one year on the Walter Knight farm, before purchasing the Miller McCullogh farm at Allingham, Alberta. It was during these years that Florence and Ray also had three children, while raising barley and beef cattle under the C U BAR brand. On a mixed farm-cattle ranch that did not have telephone service or modern indoor facilities, Florence kept the books, cooked and cleaned, drove trucks and heavy machinery during the harvest, raised her family and managed day-to-day business affairs for her loving husband, Ray, while relying heavily on the Paul and McDonald Livestock Sales report, broadcast every week-day on CFCN radio through the 1950s and 1960s. She reasoned that it would make better sense to hire a girl to cook and baby-sit while Florence and Ray brought in the harvest, vaccinated, branded and administered to their growing herd, rather than employing a hired man.

Selling their Allingham holdings in 1967, Florence and Ray purchased the Arnold Lawson Farm at Bowden, Alberta, and began expanding their modest holdings there. In 1968, Florence briefly worked at Bowden Nursery, before being hired to co-manage the Resource Centre at Innisfail Junior and Senior High School, under the direction of Principal Joe von Stein. Two years later, Ray and Florence moved their family to Calgary, where Florence was briefly employed at Marion Carson School. Later, Florence was offered a secretarial position at the University of Calgary. Twenty-three years later, Florence retired as head secretary to the Dean of Electrical Engineering, University of Calgary.

After a "severance of access" to a beloved granddaughter – at a time when Florence and Ray should have been quietly enjoying retirement with their family – Florence was elevated to the position of National Director, Alberta Office for the Canadian Grandparents Rights Society. As a result of her daily direction and tireless efforts, Florence successfully lobbied for changes to be made in family law, that grandparents would be recognized not only as "persons" before the law, but also deemed "necessary in a grandchild's life," for all time, in Canada. During her 14 years as a grandparents advocate, Florence was asked for advice by federal and provincial ministers of State, Senators and Jurists struggling to find improvements to family access, post-divorce, for all parties concerned. Although she would bear witness to hundreds of grandparents successfully re-gaining access to beloved grandchildren in Alberta, Florence would never again be reunited with her "lost" granddaughter, through no fault of her own.

With Ray's passing in July 2006, after having served as her husband's primary caregiver for three difficult years- Florence did all she could for her remaining family; her door was always open to family and friends, her warmth sincere, her smile genuine and welcoming, the food prepared on her table by her own hand for all to share. In the last four years of her life, Florence often travelled to and from the United States, often in the company of a dear friend, Bill Fylik, for many weeks' duration. She returned from these vacations animated, always happy to be back amongst family. "Family" was everything in her life, and she always had her family's best interests at heart, first and foremost. Florence's legacy cannot be adequately measured, for the impact her life's work had on so many affected family members-from families she never even knew – located virtually everywhere in this country.

Florence Knight is survived by her three children, Ken (Olga) Knight, Darrell (Barb) Knight and Linda Knight; grandchildren, Jason, Jessica, Oscar, James, Gracy, Sara, Marian, Carolina, Ulyses, Kenneth, Hunter, River, Arthur and great-grandchildren, Michaela, Yasmin, Oscar, Julian, Tailah, Mia, as well as her brother, Lawrence (Roberta) Androsoff of Saskatoon.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Friday, May 9, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Celebration of Florence's Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Crossfield Cemetery. The family would like to thank the Foothills Medical Centre Dr's. Geoghegan and McKenna and the staff on Units 62, 72 and 81 as well as the staff of Bow View Manor for their attention and care to Florence Knight. Due to family allergies, Florence's family requests that you do not smoke before coming to the service or at the cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. While there, she participated in the many activities and outings and that gave her immense joy. A highlight of one of her outings was meeting Marcus Crandell, quarterback for the Saskatchewan Roughriders and having her picture taken with him. She loved all sports and enjoyed watching any and all games of any kind on TV. Mom was a walking history buff, particularly when it came to family history. She could look at an old picture of someone and tell you exactly who they were, where they were born, where they worked, who they married and how many children they had, etc. She had a great sense of humor and was also very quick witted. We are happy that she is joining Dad, the love of her life.

Deceased Date: 2012-09-07
Obituary:
BACON, Lawrence "Shorty"
On Friday September 7th, 2012 Lawrence "Shorty" Bacon peacefully joined the angels with family by his side. He will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by all those who knew him throughout the full 99 years he lived.

Shorty was born in Foam Lake to William and Mary Bacon on May 10th 1913. He was the 6th of 9 children. He married Dorothy in 1939 and they raised two children, Carole and Ron in Saskatoon. Shorty proudly served overseas in the Air Force in WWII. After the war, he worked for MacDonald's Consolidated and then Saskatoon City Transit for 30 years retiring in 1978. In retirement, he and Dorothy travelled together and wintered in Yuma Arizona and Parksville, BC before Dorothy's passing in 1990.

Shorty grew up in Saskatoon attending King George, Bedford Road and Tech. He excelled athletically playing basketball, soccer, baseball, rugby, and hockey. Throughout his life Shorty stayed active. In his 90's he still bowled and golfed daily with his buddies at Holiday Park. Shorty was also good with his hands building his house in Montgomery Place in 1954 and the cabin at Pike Lake a year later.

Shorty was always involved in the Anglican Church. He would light the boiler at St. Marks after a shift at work, participate in Sunday services, serve on the Board, drive the ladies to church and home, and sang in the choir at St. George's. Deceased Date: 2013-10-28
Obituary:
HOOKWAY, Betty (Bessie Alma Bartholomew) April 29, 1915 - October 28, 2013
It was a full life, lived well and long. With dignity and peace, and still of very sound mind and clarity of thought, Betty passed away on October 28, 2013 at the age of 98.

Known for her cheerfulness and positive attitude, Betty was a good listener with a special ability for helping others talk through their challenges and find the path to their own decisions. She remained quite independent in her own home until a fall in September 2008 and after a month in hospital, moved to Prairie Spring Intermediate Care Home for a year and a half and after a serious bout of pneumonia and a six week hospitalization, was moved to Extendicare, a long-term care facility quite close to the Cairns Avenue neighborhood where she lived for so many years.

Betty received her education at Mayfair School, Bedford Road Collegiate and Saskatoon Technical School. She was employed by the T. Eaton Company for a number of years prior to her marriage to Sterling in 1940. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August, 1990.

She was an active member of the Christ Church Dramatic Society and Saskatoon Tech Drama Group, taking a number of leading roles in plays, "Open Lit" nights, skits and singing. She always enjoyed these activities and the good, long-lasting friendships that were formed. She was an Explorer leader at Bethel United Church for several years and thrived on mentoring this pre-teen group. For over 20 years, Betty was a member of the Neighborhood Bridge Club formed in 1951, and was a keen, strategic player. Members changed over the years but wonderful fellowships remained. They played high level bridge but also enjoyed much laughter and cared about each other deeply. Betty and Sterling enjoyed ballroom, square and round dancing and belonged to Cotton Capers, Swinging Skirts and Dudes and Dolls dance clubs for many years.

Betty is survived by only daughter Sandra (Al) Ritchie; sister-in-law Audrey Bartholomew; nieces and nephews Shirley Fenwick, Gloria Jones, Valerie Wiedrick, Shannon Van Elsakker, Carol Gossner, Rick, Rob, Stewart, John and Jim Bartholomew and their families; and is lovingly remembered by Al's family, Sharon, Allan, Doug and Heather Kerr and their families, Gail, Wayne, Alison, Drew and Mary Kells and close family friends Margaret and Gerhard Freund, Lynda Davis and Linda Roy.

Betty was predeceased by her parents, Ellen and William Bartholomew; husband Sterling; brothers Bill and Bob; sisters Patricia and Kathleen; sisters-in-law Helen Hookway, Ida Hookway Croteau, Alice and Beatrice Rhoden, Florence Cluff, Phyllis Bartholomew; brothers-in-law Perc and Miles Hookway, Harry and Charles Rhoden; nephews Dean Rhoden and Howard Bartholomew.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Extendicare for their respectful care in the three years Betty resided with them and also extend a special thanks to long-time family physician Dr. Donald Stefiuk for his gentle care and good humor. He and Betty could always make each other laugh.
A Celebration of Betty's life will be held on Monday, November 4, at 11:00 a.m. at Saskatoon Funeral Home, 338 - 4th Avenue North with a reception to follow at the Edwards Family Centre across the street. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Saskatoon Cancer Centre or to the donor's charity of choice.

Pauline Metanchuk (Bealey)

Birth Date: 1926-05-11
Deceased Date: 2011-10-13
Obituary:
METANCHUK, Pauline (nee Bealey) May 11, 1926 - October 13, 2011
It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of our dear mother and baba, Pauline Metanchuk in St. Paul's Hospital at the age of 85 years.

Pauline is survived by her daughters, Paula (Florian) Brychun, Iris (Barry) Woytowich; grandchildren, Chris (Tara), Chayne (Tiffany), Brian, Heather; great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Cassidy, Anthony; as well as her sister, Olga Bealey; brother, Ron (Helen) Bealey; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph; parents, Nicholas and Mary; brothers, Edward and Julian; as well as her sister, Gloria.

Pauline was born in Cudworth, Saskatchewan and lived there as well as in Hague as a young girl, finally moving to Saskatoon where she attended St. Mary's School as well as Bedford Road Collegiate. Mom also spent several years living and working in Vancouver with Office Assistance and then returning to Saskatoon, where she met and married the love of her life, Joseph Metanchuk. Together they provided a wonderful life for their two daughters. Mom was a hard worker, outpacing all of us. Early mornings and late nights were the norm as she waited for dad to come home from his evening shift so they could visit over a cup of coffee. During this time she was employed by ABC Printing. She did precision camera and bindery work for many years. She greatly enjoyed her work.

Along with Dad, Mom was an active member of St. George's Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral and the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League. She sang in the alto section of the choir for many years, alongside her family. Mom was an avid gardener, with the huge backyard entirely planted and an excellent housekeeper. She was always canning, freezing, and baking. Each year, mom and dad hosted a large Ukrainian Christmas gathering, where they would invite extended family, friends, and priests over for two huge meals which Mom lovingly prepared.

One of Mom's greatest skills was her sewing expertise. She turned out garment after garment. Mom sewed dresses for her girls for every occasion, bridesmaid's dresses, suits, as well as clothing for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they arrived. She was involved as a parent with the Ukrainian Youth Group, Plast, cooking for camps as well as with the Yevshan Dancers where she was a chaperone along with Dad to London and Sweden. She was a costume seamstress even having a sewing centre in her basement in the months leading up to tours.

Mom dearly enjoyed the cabin at Manitou Beach, and many happy summers were spent there with all generations, relaxing, picking wild berries and enjoying nature with her family. In later years, she also helped with the Auxiliary of St. Joseph's Nursing Home. After Dad's passing, Mom lived in her own home until retirement when she went to reside with her sister Olga. When her health deteriorated, she moved to Central Haven Special Care Home.

Mom always doted on her children and later, as Baba on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was the most kind and loving mother and baba that anyone could ever have. In fact, many young people called her Mom, even to her final days. She was just that kind and wonderful. Joseph referred to her as his angel. We miss you Mom and we love you forever. We know that you are with your loved ones, along with you Savior and we will all meet again.

Prayers for Pauline will be held at Park Funeral Chapel (311 Third Avenue North, Saskatoon) on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of St. George (214 Avenue M South, Saskatoon) on Friday, October 21, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. Officiating will be Very Rev. Olga Bealey

Birth Date: 1930-01-31
Deceased Date: 2014-06-10
Obituary:
BEALEY, Olga Jean
The family of Olga Jean Bealey is saddened to announce her passing on June 10, 2014 at St. Joseph's Home, Saskatoon.

Olga was born at home, in Hague, Saskatchewan on January 31, 1930. She settled in Saskatoon with her family and attended St. Mary's School as well as Bedford Road Collegiate. She studied accounting at the University of Saskatchewan and went to work for the Grey Nuns of Saskatoon at St. Paul's Hospital, where she was Chief Accountant. Her career at St. Paul's spanned 35 years where she was devoted to her work and to the Grey Nuns.

Olga was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt and great-aunt. Family and faith were the most important aspects of her life. She built a house near St. George's Cathedral in 1971 and invited her parents to retire there with her along with her sister Gloria. She cared for them and especially Gloria who she faithfully drove to Cosmopolitan Industries on a daily basis for many years. She enjoyed many summers with family at the cabin at Manitou Beach. Brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles all enjoyed happy times there. In her last 20 years, she shared her home with her sister Pauline.

Olga was active in the community, particularly in the church where she sang in the alto section of St. George's Cathedral Choir. Olga was also involved with St. Joseph's Nursing Home where she was an active Auxiliary member and sat on the Board of Directors as Chairman for many years. She was a great supporter of the Ukrainian Sisters of St. Joseph and all their good work.

Olga travelled internationally to Italy and Sweden and she made many trips to Prince George, Port Coquitlam and Vancouver to visit her brothers Ron, Julian, Ed and their families. She was the family photographer and she recorded many events over the years. Aunty Olga was always happy to take her nieces or nephews on outings such as a drive-in movie or a sleepover where you were sure to be spoiled. She was the first to have high tech items of the day, such as a color TV. We would all be invited perhaps for KFC and to watch Ed Sullivan.

Anyone who knew Olga remembers her sense of humor. Once she got up during a public meeting where we were to introduce ourselves and said "Hello, my name is Johnny Cash." Olga had a fun loving spirit and wasn't afraid to try driving her brother's motorbike or to go snowmobiling with her family in her mink coat and high heels. She was also very tender and would cry with joy when a piano or violin were played for her. She was certain of her opinions, had strength of character and was able to help many people throughout her life.

Recently she recounted the story of the antiqued looking plaque of the Virgin Mary. As a young schoolgirl she went to church every day during lent and the good sisters at school gave this to her as a reward. Olga is now with her Savior in Paradise and is reunited with her family.

Olga was predeceased by her father Nicholas; her mother Mary; brothers Edward and Julian and sisters Gloria and Pauline; as well as brother-in-law Joseph Metanchuk; sister-in-law Marjorie Bealey; and nephew Donald Bealey. Marion Wake (Billings)

Birth Date: 1928-10-19
Deceased Date: 2020-04-26
Obituary:
WAKE, Marion Annabelle
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our Mother and Grandmother, Marion Annabelle Wake on April 26, 2020. Marion is now reunited with her beloved husband, Doug.

Mom was a lady of great strength, beauty, grace and humor. Marion was born on October 19, 1928 in Saskatoon and was one of six children born to Leanna and Gerald Billings and grew up in Saskatoon. Marion attended Princess Alexandra and Bedford Road schools. Mom's childhood friends remained dear to her throughout her life. Marion was an accomplished athlete, excelling in basketball, fastball, and swimming. As a young girl, Marion developed a passion for music and enjoyed listening to opera and attending concerts. Marion completed a business course at Technical Collegiate which led to her employment with the telephone office.

Marion married Douglas Sadler Wake and for a number of years they owned and operated the family business, Beehive Flooring. Mom and Dad raised five children. Mom was a great cook and gardener. We will forever remember her on a warm summer day working in the garden weeding her beautiful flowers.

Marion, through the YMCA, held swimming lessons for children every summer for 15 years at the family pool. Friends and family were always welcome to join for community swim classes.

Mom was Dad's constant companion. They loved to travel to the cottage together with their poodles and enjoyed the peacefulness of the lake. As Dad's health failed from a stroke, Mom was relied upon more and looked after Dad at home. Our hearts warmed to see the care Mom gave our Dad until his passing in 2004. We have been blessed and we will dearly miss our Mother and Grandmother.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Tim Wake (children Doug, James), Skip Wake (children Brian, David), Karla (Neil) Kerr (children Kelly, Amanda, Lisa), Janey Prickett (children Lindsay, Brooke, Landon), and Kim (Shelly) Wake (children Amber, Tyler, Mason, Kelsi, Ashton, Jaden); as well as numerous great-grandchildren.

Austin William Bomok

Birth Date: 1994-04-06
Graduation year: 2012
Deceased Date: 2022-07-16
Obituary:
Austin William Bomok
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the loss of our beloved son, brother, family member and friend passed away tragically at Dore Lake SK on July 16, 2022 at 28 years of age.

Austin will be missed everyday by his dad, Terry (Sue) Bomok and mother, Debbie Bomok; his sister, Amaris (Len) Reiman, their four children; brother, Ryan Bomok; sister, Billie Bomok; stepsister, Ashley (Andy) Quinney and their two children. He is survived by Grandmother Maryanne Boyanchuk and will be deeply missed by his girlfriend, Jenn Malyk. He will be forever remembered by his many aunts, uncles and cousins from the Bomok, Boyanchuk, Reiley, Renaud and Scheibelhoffer families. He will live in the hearts of many great friends, peers and members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Growing up in Saskatoon he attended Bedford Road High School and was part of the wrestling and football teams. An all-around athlete, he continued to pursue fitness and training with cross-fit groups in the city. It was no surprise that in 2015 Austin took the oath to become a member of the Canadian Armed Forces. He completed basic training 2016 in Saint-Jean-sur-Richeleiu, QC. Later, Austin was posted to Wainwright, AB and then lastly to CFB Edmonton as a member of Edmonton's 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry - addressed as “Corporal Austin Bomok.”

Austin loved the outdoors: Fishing, quadding, snowboarding and any adventure that he had the opportunity to participate in with his friends and family. He was a MasterChef, a loving uncle and would give the shirt off his back for you. He cherished and enjoyed each time he was able to be at his Auntie Lisa and Uncle Brian’s farm- whether that be popping in for a visit, a family dinner, or to lend a hand with whatever needed to be done. He was always filling us in on his next training exercise, where they were headed, and the crazy stories from the military field. We’re going to miss his smile, those stories, and how he made us feel to be around him.

Austin spent the last few weeks of his life surrounded by his love, his family, and his friends; making sure he snuck a visit in with his longtime best friends, having dinner with parents and chasing his nephews around. This was within the short window he had while on summer holidays before his much-anticipated fishing trip with his cousin Scott.

His life ended unexpectedly and we are left with broken hearts. Although we did not have the chance to say goodbye, as his family and his friends, we will always remember how lucky we are to have had the chance to be a part of his family, to be his friend and to live in his heart.

Austin is now with his Baba Grace and Grampa Floyd Graham. Sitting on a slice of heaven in the clouds; and they each have line in the water.

Our family would like to extend sincere gratitude to the RCMP, Rescue Teams, Air Pilots and dearest residents of Dore Lake who helped us in Austin’s search.

Austin’s life will be celebrated on Friday, August 12, 2022 at 1:00pm at TCU Place (35-22nd St. East in Saskatoon, SK). Doors open at 12:30pm. A private family interment will be held the following day. For those of who cannot attend, the service will be livestreamed and link will be posted on Facebook at a later date.

In lieu of flowers we ask that you visit an old friend, pick up your favourite food to cook, take a walk in the trees and enjoy those around you while you still can. That’s what Austin would have done.

Glenn was raised on the grounds of the Saskatoon Sanatorium where his father was Medical Superintendent. He graduated from King George Public School and Bedford Road Collegiate, and attended the University of Saskatchewan, where he received his BSc. in Agriculture (1954) and his MSc. Specializing in Plant Breeding and Genetics (1956).

Glenn was an active member of the Youth Group at St. Thomas Wesley United Church, where he met his future wife Shirley, and many of their life-long friends. After the birth of their first two children, he was transferred to Regina and worked out of the Agricultural Research Station. He spent 28 years overseeing the winter seed production nursery in Brawley, California, and was able to expose his children to exciting travels regularly through these times. He retired his career at Agriculture Canada in 1990, as the Head of the Experimental Farm at Indian Head, SK. He was an Honorary Life Member of the Canadian Seed Growers' Association.

Glenn joined the Masonic family in February, 1983. He served as Worshipful Master of Sherwood Lodge #214 in 1988-89, Grand Steward in 1991-92, and District Deputy Grand Master of District No. 2 in 1995-96. He affiliated with Assiniboia Lodge #49 in January 1998. He was honored to receive his 33rd degree in September, 2011.

Glenn and Shirley joined the Order of the Eastern 1984. The two were very active in Star. Glenn served as Worthy Patron, Regina Chapter #7 (1994) and of Corinthian Chapter #89 (2002), and Worthy Grand Patron of the Grand Chapter of Saskatchewan in 2003-04.

Glenn and Shirley shared a passion for travel; they visited India, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, Great Britain, and made many road trips across North America in their retirement years, never tiring of seeing new places, visiting far-flung family and friends, and experiencing different cultures.

Glenn and Shirley moved from Regina to Victoria in late 2011 and found a wonderful home in the Wellesley Retirement Community. They enjoyed the mild climate of Victoria and spent lots of time exploring the city and visiting the ocean. As Shirley's health declined, Glenn became her care-giver. Her death in July of 2018, 11 days after their 65th wedding anniversary, was devastating to him.
Music was always a large part of Glenn's life; he spent over 40 years playing tuba in various bands in both Regina and Victoria. He attended the International Music Camp many times and was involved in several "Tuba Christmas" concerts. Glenn continued to play until October 2018, when his health began to decline. His retirement from music was sorrowful and he spoke of his musical career often in his last days.

Glenn's family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at The Victoria Hospice for their amazing care and support. Tributes and memories can be shared by visiting www.earthsoption.com In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Victoria Hospice. A Celebration of Life will be held in Spring 2019.

Heather Brittain (Bowering)

Obituary:
Heather passed away peacefully at RUH on June 21, 2011 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Heather was predeceased by her parents Garnet and Lillian Bowering, and her partner Earl Ryder.
She is survived by her son Keith Bowering and granddaughter Aurora; daughter Tanya (Gilles) Petite and grandchildren Alexis and Azarius; daughter Tamara Brittain; her three brothers, Garth (Jean) Bowering of Brandon, MB, Clinton (Dieder) and Doreen Bowering, Bruce and Les Bowering of Saskatoon; one sister Bonney (Bruce) Schwanbeck of Saskatoon; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other family. She will be missed by her special friends Ava Ewert, Dorothy Brotheridge and Gloria Jones.
Heather lived all her life in Saskatoon. She was employed at Vecima Networks for the past 15 years where she was a formidable presence. She often intimidated new people at work with her zany sense of humor (they later found out that she was a big teddy bear who would do anything for a friend). She made many life-long friends and leaves many co-workers to mourn her. One of her favorite pastimes was to heckle Vecima's president when he was speaking at company Christmas parties and meetings.
Heather's family and friends were the center of her life. She had so many acquaintances that no matter where we went in our travels, she would run into someone she knew. We will miss her quick smile and unending compassion. Even when she was so sick, she worried about everyone else. Heather's battle with cancer started 14 years ago and she put up a good fight. She was cancer free for 11 years and had a reoccurrence three years ago.
Her family would like to thank Home Care, the nurses who looked after her at the Cancer Clinic, and the Palliative Care Team for their support helping Heather with her battle. There will be a celebration of her life at Hillcrest Funeral Home (east on 8th Street, turn right before rail crossing), on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at 2:00 p.m.

Kelly Bowers

Birth Date: 1949-03-27
Deceased Date: 2019-09-17
Obituary:
Kelly Wayne Bowers, known to all as Biff, passed away after suffering a fatal heart attack at his home in Saskatoon on September 17, 2019.
Kelly leaves Sandy, his wife of 47 years, daughters Aerin Bowers and Kasie Hoffman, sons-in-laws Corey Hoffman and Jimmy Guy, and his beloved grandchildren Scarlet Guy and Quinn and Sara Hoffman. He also leaves siblings Shannon (Gary), Dawn (Bob), Pat, Casey (Joyce), Colin (Yvonne), Mike (Mary), sister- in- law Donna Mitchelmore (Don Hrytzak), and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by parents Dawn and Robert Bowers, and his brother Kevin. His countless friends and his community in Saskatoon and the world beyond meant so much to him and are a testament to a life well-lived and well-loved.
Kelly was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on March 27, 1949.
As a youngster, Kelly developed a love of sports that would endure and flourish through his life, and impact so many others.
He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan and started his teaching career at Bedford Road Collegiate. He also taught at Mount Royal Collegiate, and was the Athletic Director for the Saskatoon Public School Division. He did his Master's Degree in San Diego in 1985, taking his family on a year long adventure that we still talk and laugh about to this day. His tireless passion and leadership with BRIT was a hallmark in a career that we are all so proud of. It's nearly impossible to capture all of his involvement in Saskatoon sports but we must mention Saskatoon Minor Football, the Riverside Tennis Club, the Huskies, the Hilltops, and the Kinsmen League.
Kelly loved to travel and was always booking a trip, or helping plan someone else's. He recently enjoyed winters in Palm Springs, where he played tennis and golf with friends old and new.
He looked forward to our family Christmas in Rossland, BC, where he may not have led the way down the hill, but was always first in the lodge ordering nachos and beer. Ski trips with Biff could not be beat.
His backyard pool was the place to be in summer, where Biff always served cold beers, fired up the BBQ, and hosted his famous lawn dart tournaments.
His enthusiasm and zest for life was evident to everyone who crossed his path. It was impossible to go anywhere with him without running into former students, colleagues, and friends. He never forgot a name or a face.
He was so supportive of his 3 grandchildren, who cherished his visits, his stories, his humour, and his encouragement. He was an incredible mentor who created so many fun experiences for Scarlet, Quinn, and Sara.
Kelly was the most amazing Dad. He was a shining example of how to work hard, how to treat others, and how to live an unforgettable life.
We will miss him so, so much.
Please join us on Saturday, September 21 at 1 pm for a Celebration of Life at Prairieland Park, Hall C. We look forward to your stories and especially your hugs. Thank you for being part of our lives.

Joy Horner (Briscoe)

Birth Date: 1922-02-06
Deceased Date: 2003-12-07
Obituary:
HORNER
The death of Joy Horner of Blaine Lake occurred peacefully on December 7, 2003.

The daughter of Reuben and Tillie Briscoe, Joy was born in Saskatoon on February 6, 1922. She attended Bedford Road Collegiate and Saskatoon Normal School. While teaching at Blaine Lake, Joy met Albert Horner, a local farmer, and they were married in 1944. Over the next five years, five children were born. In 1958, Albert was elected MP for The Battlefords. These were the days before air travel to and from Ottawa so he was often gone for months at a time. Joy managed the busy household with five active teenagers.

Joy was a member of the Blaine Lake United Church. She served as church organist and her home was a meeting place for the interdenominational Hi-C young people's group. She was a founding member of the William Diehl Chapter of the IODE and a founding member of the Home and School Association. She was the first president of the Blaine Lake Figure Skating Club, served as Chairperson of the Blaine Lake Branch of the Wapiti Regional Library and was a member of the Blaine Lake School Board. When the children left home, Joy returned to University for Early Childhood Education classes and taught kindergarten on the Muskeg Lake Reservation for ten years. When she retired, she took up ceramics and taught ceramics classes from her home. She served as a delegate to the Canadian Ceramics Association.

Joy was always one of the first to reach out to new people in the community. At her home, the coffeepot was always on and she was never too busy to stop what she was doing to have a visit. In 1995, Joy suffered a stroke from which she made a remarkable recovery except that her speech was left impaired. In 2002, Joy became a resident of the Wheatland Lodge in Leask.

Predeceased by her parents, her brother, Ted, in 1942, and her only son John, in 1992, Joy is survived by her husband of 59 years, Albert Horner; her daughter-in-law, Alice Horner, Saskatoon; and her four daughters and their husbands, Maureen and Tom Barrie, Blaine Lake, Leah and Dave Sheskin, Niagra-on-the-Lake, ON, Rosemary and Dan O'Handley, Kenaston, and Colleen and George Patterson, Moose Jaw. She is also survived by her ten grandchildren: Colleen O'Handley and Andrew Kirk, Airdrie, AB, Ryan and Diane O"Handley, Charlottetown, PEI, Patrick O"Handley, Saskatoon, Colleen (Horner) and Trevor Isley, Saskatoon, Erin (Barrie) and Darren Diehl, Blaine Lake, Megan Patterson, Toronto, Jason and Kyla Horner, Saskatoon, Tom Barrie, Saskatoon, Hugh Patterson, Regina and Michelle Horner, Saskatoon. She is also survived by eight great grandchildren: Shannon Kirk, Jenna Isley, Rachel Diehl, Abby Kirk, Grayson Isley, William Diehl, Morris O'Handley and Jordan Isley.

We will remember and miss Joy's outgoing personality, her sense of humor, her courage and determination, her beautiful smile and those dark brown eyes that could convey so much with just one look. The family would like to thank the Blaine Lake Home Care Workers and the staff of the Wheatland Lodge for their kindness and care.

A service to celebrate Joy's life will be held on Friday, December 12, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. from the Acadia Drive Funeral Chapel (915 Acadia Drive). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Arrangements have been entrusted to Dan Kennedy, ACADIA DRIVE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 955-1600.

Louisa Walker (Brown)

Birth Date: 1908-10-23
Deceased Date: 2006-02-17
Obituary:
WALKER - Louisa Esson (McKenzie, nee Brown)
Born October 23, 1908 in County Forfar, Scotland, died February 17, 2006. After a long life Louise passed away peacefully in February at age 97 at Spruce Manor Special Care Home in Dalmeny, SK.

She was the first born child of Robert and Joan Davina (Nicoll) Brown. In September 1911, Louise, her sister Anne and their mother emigrated to Dundurn, SK where they joined their father who had come over in 1910. The family expanded to include a brother, William (Buster) in 1913. Several of her father's siblings and their families lived in the same area so Louise had many cousins and their families who remained close throughout her life. After the death of her father at Vimy Ridge in 1917 the family moved permanently to Saskatoon. Some years later Joan remarried to George Simpson and Louise and her siblings gained step-cousins.

After completing public school Louise took her high school years at Bedford Road Collegiate where she acquired business and secretarial skills. She started working as a clerk-steno with Bowman Bros. and remained there until her marriage in December, 1939 to Flight Sgt. Ross McKenzie. Ross and Louise moved to the training base at Dafoe, SK. After the war they returned to Saskatoon and soon moved to 621 Avenue K South where Louise resided until August, 2002.

A few years into their marriage Ross and Louise adopted his young nephew Donnie McKenzie who had come to live with them. Ross joined his father's plumbing business, Saskatoon Plumbing and Heating and Louise worked in the office. After the death of Ross in 1953 she ran the shop for a few years with the help of employees. When the business closed she returned to Bowman Bros. and remained working there until her retirement.

In June of 1958 Louise was remarried to Andrew (Andy) Walker and he joined her and her mother at the house on Avenue K. After the death of her mother in 1962 and later after Andy's death Louise continued to live in the home she loved until the age of 93 when a debilitating stroke forced her into care. Louise or Louie as she was affectionately known cherished her friendships with extended family and friends and kept in touch by telephone or her lovely cards and letters.

Over her life she had enjoyed sports and had participated in curling. She was a staunch supporter of the Legion Womens Auxiliary and was a long time member of St. Thomas Wesley United Church. For many years she enjoyed her garden and flowers. She had a quick wit and loved a good time visiting or playing cards. Life was not always easy for Louise but she was resilient and tough and always pulled through. She was generous and loyal but would be quick to set you straight if she thought you needed to be set straight. She was a strong and vital link in her family.

Louise was predeceased by her parents Robert and Joan Brown (Simpson), her stepfather George Simpson, husbands Ross McKenzie and Andy Walker, step-son Norman McKenzie and son Donnie McKenzie. Also predeceasing her were her sister and brother-in-law Anne and Charles DesRosier, her brother and sister-in-law William (Buster) and Pearl Brown.

Surviving Louise are her daughter-in-law Sunee McKenzie and grandchildren Melissa and Christopher as well as Donnie's children by his first wife, David, Heather, and Brian McKenzie and their families in Quebec; Norman's wife Emily McKenzie and her family in BC; Anne's children Patricia Quinlan (Paul) and Gord DesRosiers (Cathy) and their families in Ontario; Buster's daughter Lynn Hildebrandt (Hank) and their family in BC; dear friend Sandy McLean (Lyle Dyck) and their family in BC. Louise is also survived by nieces and nephews on Ross and Andy's sides and by her Dundurn cousins and their families as well as Australian relatives on her mother's side and step-cousins on the George Simpson side.

In her last few years her care was overseen by her nephew on Ross McKenzie's side, Marty Irwin. We are grateful for the love and care given to Louie over many years by Sandy McLean and especially for her help and guidance over these last few years. She was not only Louie's former neighbor but was like a daughter to her. Thanks also to the staff of Spruce Manor for their gentle, loving care of Louise in the last stages of her life.

Interment of Cremains will take place Saturday, June 3, 2006. Family and friends are invited to a remembrance lunch and tea at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2006 in the South Dining Room at the Parktown Motor Hotel on 25th Street and Spadina Crescent. For further information call Lorie or Marty at (306) 242-2435.

Judy was born in Calgary, Alberta on November 9, 1943. Upon moving to Saskatoon, she attended Caswell elementary school and graduated from Bedford Road Collegiate. She worked as an office administrator in charge of Accounts Payable/Receivable for many organizations.

Judy was loved and admired for her compassion, caring nature and great sense of humor. We will always remember the love and adoration that she had for her grandchildren and how much she looked forward to her daily coffee conversations with Cori Owens (her neighbor and life-time friend).

Judy and Art spent 49 years together in City Park in a home they dearly loved, where they raised their three children and retired together. Over the years, Judy was an active member of the parent volunteer group at Wilson School and other events in the community. One of Judy's other favorite pastimes was enjoying the view from her deck at the Resort Village of Big Shell Lake. Many good memories and times were had there with close family and friends.

Judy was very creative. She explored her artistic side through many crafts and hobbies including crocheting, knitting, petite point, needlepoint, paper tole, weaving, ceramics, stained glass, and tin punching. Judy and Art loved visiting the library and reading their favorite authors together. She loved preparing for Christmas, creating hundreds of dishcloths and cowls and numerous tasty treats for family and friends.

The family wishes to thank the staff at St. Paul's Hospital who showed care and compassion for Mom in her final days. As per Judy's wishes, a small family gathering was held upon her passing. Her wishes were that everyone spends quality time with family and loved ones.

Irena Kowbuz (Bubniak)

Birth Date: 1928-10-01
Graduation year: 1944
Deceased Date: 2016-07-29
Obituary:
Concert pianist, and piano and singing teacher, passed away July 29, 2016, at Charlotte County Hospital, St. Stephen, NB, after a lengthy illness. In death, as in life, her passing was peaceful and full of grace. Irena was born in Saskatoon, SK on October 1, 1928, to the late Jakiew (Jacob) and Stephania (Hladka) Bubniuk. Irena quietly supported her Ukrainian heritage by continuing to practice the language, explore the history and perpetuate the music so loved by her parents. Irena began her musical training with Norma Mead and Lyell Gustin in Saskatoon at age 8. At age 10, she began performing on stage and on radio. At age 15, she received a full scholarship from the Royal College of Music in London, England, where she studied with notable musicians Frank Merrick (piano), Cuthbert Smith (voice) and Dr. Harold Darke (harmony and composition). After receiving High Honours in Piano and Voice in London, Irena returned to Canada to begin her teaching career, even as she maintained her performing career. In the Maritimes, Irena was head of the Voice Department in the Faculty of Music at Acadia University for two years and was the featured pianist in CBC's Kingfisher Cove, a musical variety show produced in Halifax. She spent the last six years of her life in St. Andrews, NB, teaching piano to young students. In Montreal, QC, Irena taught piano and voice at Vanier College, L'Ecole Vincent d'Indy, McGill and Concordia Universities. She also adjudicated at music festivals across Canada. Irena taught privately from the age of 10 until shortly before her passing, with many of her students continuing on into professional music careers. Irena's students were her musical family and she loved them all dearly. She strived to nourish, support and encourage with food, love, conversation, a safe place to stay, music, philosophy and psychology, so they might succeed in life and in their musical endeavours. She often said: "If you don't understand my teaching, then I'm not explaining it sufficiently." Irena was a strong advocate for the value of music in schools and believed that everyone should be provided the means and opportunity to learn music. With this conviction, Irena drew upon her Ukrainian musical heritage to write a wealth of piano teaching material that spans from beginner to advanced concert level. Irena also wrote books on voice production and resonance mechanisms in the human body, and other topics relating to the study of music to the study of science. Irena supported musical and cultural organizations such as the National Association of Teachers of Singing, the Piano Teachers Congress of New York, the New York Singing Teachers Association, the Ukrainian National Women's League of America, The Ukrainian Club of Moncton, The National Association for Music Education, the Music Teachers National Association, the New Brunswick Registered Music Teachers Association, and others. Donations to honour Irena's life may be made to the Simple Plan Foundation (www.simpleplanfoundation.org) which promotes musical training in schools as a way of helping young people develop a passion and find a purpose in life. Irena was predeceased by her sister, Doria Shack. She is survived by her children, Lydia (Jack) Kowbuz Fife, who cared for her for many years, and Larissa Kowbuz; her sister, Helen Bobyn; nieces and nephews: Greg, Tammy, Dona and Karen Shack, and Jim, Joan, Dennis, Diane, Stephen and Michele Bobyn; and Sandra Wilson, a cherished member of her beloved musical family of students and close friends, of which there are too many to mention herein – you know who you are. Heartfelt thanks and love to Eleanor Brewster, who cared for and loved Irena and became part of the family through her kindness, compassion, companionship, friendship, and loyalty. Special thanks are extended to the nurses and hospital management team medical staff at the Charlotte County Hospital for their care and support of Irena and her family. Messages of condolence may be sent online to Chipman Funeral Home at www.chipmanfuneralhome.ca or on Irena's Facebook page https:/ /www.facebook.com/irena.bubniuk.
